Willamette Disc Golf Club Monthly Meeting February 7, 2011 Present: Dave Pittman, Everett Kaser (presiding), Kelly Christiansen, Casey Lohrman, John Ross, Jay Sexton, Bob Burton, Greg Johnson, Eric Smith, Mike, Michelle, and Sam Storrs. Mike Gibson, Craig Banner, Rick Reichard, Lane Tidwell, Laura Bryngelsen. Roy Albert, Bear Judge, Mark Martin. Treasurer’s Report (Greg) $2137.25 in club funds (Statement almost always comes in the day after the meeting) after Festivus expenses etc paid for. David has additional $300-400 that will soon be spent on ordering items for accumulated scrip redemptions. Notable Festivus expenses aside from pay-outs to players were: Porta potty $120, Park fee $50, and Trophies $335. Only $2 per player (90) was deducted from entry fees which included $1 per player toward our annual insurance costs. Here is some more of Greg’s financial report on Festivus: Comedy of Errors? I do need to correct my statements at the club meeting about not accounting for the trophies in the players packs.  The $300 Calapooia Brewing Sponsorship effectively cancelled out the trophy costs other than the $35 fee for the art die for John Kinder.  The application of the Calapooia sponsorship was actually to umbrella costs, hence Calapooia version of the Festivus logo, enabling umbrellas going to both ams and pros as players packs. Therefore the club’s cash contribution was about $115. However, when I entered the formulas in the awkward PDGA payouts spreadsheet to do our typical scrip markup to roughly breakeven on inventory moved as Am prizes, I made a generous error. I marked up the value of the entry fees minus event fees only, rather than marking up just the net entry fees after deducting players pack costs. This was more like 1.55x for Advanced and 1.75x for Intermediates, where we normally do 1.3x for women’s divisions and 1.25x for all other am divisions. This resulted in an average of about $10 extra scrip issued for the 32 paying Am positions. $316 extra scrip for 66 total Am players. Happy Festivus X for those Ams that played well enough to win scrip! The club’s inventory cost of CTP discs, extra prizes through scrip redemption, and players packs given to Everett & Gene for helping, should in the end total between $250-300. Festivus (Greg) We brainstormed about which holes worked well and which had problems. Greg duly registered all the information. There were questions about inebriation of players and some disinhibited behavior. Some folks seemed to get angry as they drank and their play deteriorated. Strong positives were the creative use of a very familiar course to create a new and interestingly different one, the great tee signs that explained OB rules graphically, and the great food and beverages and the party feel to the whole experience for most of us. Greg’s notes: Large sandwich board sign by park entrance announcing course reserved for tournament all day. We need a stronger deterrent to casual players squeezing in. Maybe a footnote, ‘Please go play Willamette Park course today!’ Hole 1 by tourney central, move away from children’s play areas. Use both volleyball courts for triple – triple mando was one wild and crazy suggestion. Hole 5 (hole 1 to 17 deep basket) better than temp placement by park entrance. Hole 6 with option to throw down road was not viewed favorably. While unlikely, there is also a potential for vehicles to park there during the round. Hole 7 was an enjoyable use of the oak grove area staying out of the soggiest areas. Hole 8 ho hum birdie or par hole. We moved on before getting into discussion of other temporary holes. GJ’s thoughts on the other holes: Hole 4, liked closed upper lot, from 18 tee to practice basket despite 1 OB adventure. Hole 5, Picnic table to 18 deep was more interesting than I expected it to be. Hole 18, tee box with no mat to basket on drainage grate was terrible. Note: need future work party to replace #11 teebox and old mat can be used for future temp layouts. Hole 19 was much more interesting with the forced double mando. Hole 22 over baseball diamond, not sure novelty of basket on bleachers made the hole better. No doubt it turned a few birdie chances in to pars. Upward rule of verticality probably not right, but playing from underneath would suck. I might put basket in close proximity to opening in fence on 3rd base line next time. Adair (Jay) Work Party was helpful and we plan to have another on February 19th, Saturday at 9:30 to noon, to possibly continue putting down gravel, clearing some trees e.g. on hole 6?, constructing protection around bio-obstacles that are vulnerable to us disc golfers. This will be followed by a major/minor disc golf tournament possibly doubles if that is the pleasure of the workers. Willamette (Jay and others) Discussion was held regarding how proactive we should be and can be at Willamette. Laura suggested that we should table this discussion until Karl Pilotte and Greg Alpert are invited to come to the next club meeting so that they can give their take on the future of the club’s relationship to the City and the Willamette Park Disc Golf Course. Adair Doubles (Craig Banner) seems to be going well. 119 dollars was earned for the club coffers. The second Sunday of each month the Doubles will be at Willamette instead of Adair. Handicap Tourney at Adair and Bryant. Mike plans to do this at Bryant and Adair Tuesday and Thursday, starting around March 21st. This will be a fundraiser for The Willamette Open. (Which this year will be the 16th and 17th of July). Greg Johnson will be the TD this year. The WDGC Invitational date will be March 19th unless I decide to push it out to April 30th. I’m leaning toward making the 30th a 2nd event with a bigger emphasis on mini-golf and maybe some form of doubles on the main course. Disc Sales (Dave) We had 66 Ams in Festivus who got a disc and this month he sold 69 discs and 68 were bought with Festivus scrip. Dave could have used a helper at the tournament. Inventory is less than 500 discs. He is planning to order a resupply soon. Respectfully submitted, Bob Burton, secy.
