Willamette Disc Golf Club May Meeting Monday, May 3, 2010, 7 p.m. Woodstock’s Pizza Attendance: John Ross, Dave Pittman, Everett Kaser, Kelly Christiansen, Eric Smith, Michelle and Mike Storrs, Greg Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Martin, Jason Hill, Justin Skinnel, Craig Banner, Rick Reichard (Mike Gibson voting in absentia). Adair Report: (Mr. Kaser) There is a new basket position on No. 6 that needs some cleaning out. People have been cleaning spontaneously. Some discussion followed on opening it up to be visible from the tee box. Other course maintenance tweaks were also discussed. Mr. Kaser said he’s had no feedback on two other new positions, including hole 10. After some discussion and without objections, the middle position will be installed on No. 10’s berm. He won’t put the basket in that position until it dries out. Mud in hole six positions and what to do about it were also discussed. We will have to replace the rubber on tee 11 this summer. We’ve been buying wood for framing as we need it. Parks’ new mower pretty much cut hole no. 2's tee pad in half trying to mow closer to the pad. Mr. Christiansen would like to see more of the log islands to support continued vegetation growth in patches. He suggested putting several of those out in fairways. Parks likes the concept. It needs logs that can be cut. He will try to move up the timeline on replacing No. 2 and No. 11 mats. We have rubber for three pads. We might reuse a shorter pad on 2 that’s been cut or work with the leftover rubber on hand. The wooden frame on No. 5 will help with the wear issue on pads. Willamette Report: (Nobody) We need to call to see if it can get mowed. Disc Tsar: (Mr. Pittman) We’ve provided scrip for the ace race at a cost of $255 in Salem. It was designed to break even. Only 3 people haven't cashed in their scrip. The Salem club’s Chris Wilcox wants to place an Innova order through us because Innova’s closed the door on new distributors. The area is saturated with new distributors. No more distributor licenses are being issued. The Eugene club’s been OK since Tom Embry provided the license to the Eugene club. Just released Star Katanas are to be ordered and there are-pro rubber rocs today as the new discs for May. Wash Report (Mr. Smith) He’s thinking about not getting tee shirts or hats to save expenses. He’s thinking about prizes and collecting them so people can pick from donated things. It’s kind of nice if people get something. It’s over a couple of months away. Everett suggests selling slow moving discs to Wash at costs or donating them. It worked out great last year for people to donate directly instead of paying for players item. There was a motion for 10 discs to be contributed to the Wash and $100 cash. There were several seconds. Without objection, the motion passed. Mr. Smith said he’s open to a wide range of prizes. Bryant Park Report: (Mr. Pittman) The first concrete Bryant tee pad is in and local pro Brandon Hill said cost was $75. They’re looking at putting in 9 more at 5x10 dimensions. Holes along the river will not have concrete pads. We might donate some money from the club. Work was done by hand, using 26 bags. Some will probably be 4X10. Albany Parks is supposed to provide the gravel, despite a recent glitch in delivery. The Triples event had a great turnout and lots of fun. Dion Arlyn’s singles tournament provided a full day of golf. He raised $190 for the Willamette Open. Singles also raised $190 for the Beaver State Fling. Some money went to the club at $2 per person entered. Doubles Report: (Mr. Craig) We’ve had pretty good turnouts for the last two weeks. He’s collected $141 in mulligans. The current ace pot is $447 and $200 with the club in reserve. A major party is in the works. Handicap Report: (Mr. Storrs) He’s been averaging 11 players. We were used to averaging 13 last year. The next person to get an ace will probably get a ‘hoodie’ sweatshirt. If we have two in a year, the second person gets a tee shirt. Treasurer’s Report: (Mr. Johnson) Funds after paying for insurance stand at $3,300 with probably $1400-1500 soon to be spent on disc replenishments and fronting Squirrels disc order. Quite a few discs are on order. Some minis will be included along with Calapooia and WDGC mini discs and drivers as designed. Willamette Open fundraiser discs have been ordered—including 70 Championship Katanas. They are not coming much before the Spring Fling tournament. Spring Fling Report: (Mr. Johnson) There are few advance registrations for the Spring Fling on his property in Blodgett. He needs them completed to figure out how much food to provide. The Layout will be the same as for the Invitational. There may be some more mini holes with a combined 13-18 number of mini baskets available. Waterloo Report: (Mr. Skinnel) He is waiting on information on promised donations and feedback from parks on which tee pads they will support. They are very interested in tee pads but haven't decided whether they should be concrete or rubber. They’re willing to donate some materials but they’re on board. A parks representative he spoke with didn't ask for any numbers. Mr. Johnson suggested Parks might benefit from knowing the cost on rubber mats and how to do it right so they can more knowledgeably decide. She needs to be able to compare rubber with concrete. They need to know which option they are going with. We would like to see events running out there but tee pads are important. The head ranger wants concrete tee pads but Parks administration has rejected them. We need to talk to Greg Short. They asked for both concrete and rubber tee pad pictures. We have a lot of people committed to getting tee pads installed. It’s a lot of money and will take time to get the rubber mats. The final choice really depends on what the parks is willing to allow. Mr. Ross suggested writing a letter to Parks or setting up a meeting to show support for new pads. The head of Waterloo parks seems on board. Need to find out where or why there was opposition to concrete pads. The Calapooia Open is not using the course this year for the tournament because of the lack of pads. President’s report: (read by Mr. Kaser) Renewal of Insurance Policy - We have finally gotten our insurance renewal at $729 and our 2010-2011 agreement with Corvallis Parks is to be signed next week with the same arrangement as last year. The OSU disc golfers are following through with their Humane Society fundraiser - Dogs In The Park - May 8th. They have a website at http://doginthepark.org. It runs from 10 a.m. till 6 p.m. It costs $10 for the round and a raffle. People can sign up for tee times or just stop by and enter. Mr. Johnson proposed that the club donate five discs to the event. The will be putters and approach discs mostly. Fliers for the event have been seen all over town. No event representative was present. Mr. Skinnel said he would be going out to the event next Saturday and could take the five donated discs to the event. Benton County Parks Master Plan Update – They have had two meeting so far. At the Adair meeting we had Kelly and Everett advocating. We need more golfers advocating for the sport. Mr. Sexton’s proposal: He asks the club to consider offering to replace the stolen basket at Philomath Middle School at a cost of about $350. This is an excellent teaching course and the basket has not been replaced in the six months it has been missing. He will talk with the school next week and I would like to be able to offer to replace the basket if they have been unwilling or unable to do so. This course is a great place to expose new people to disc golf in a non-busy setting. Benton parks master plans. Another meeting is scheduled for May 27 at Ray’s Food Market for North Albany Park. One of the parks directors would like to have a course at North Albany Park, even though Kintzman was against it. It would be laid out around the edge of the park. Meeting room will be in the produce department. Members discussed using the damaged basket at Adair. The idea was tabled in favor of more options being explored. Maybe we could help with a fundraiser in stead. The meeting was closed at 8:22 p.m.
