Willamette Disc Golf Club Monthly Meeting Monday, July 6, 2009 Attendance: Jay Sexton, Greg Johnson, Dave Pittman, Eric Smith, Josh Powell, Everett Kaser, Mark Martin, Mike & Sam Storrs, Justin Skinnell, Craig Banner, John Ross and guests DeAnna and Tyler Picket. Treasurer’s Report: (Mr. Johnson) He has about $2300 in the club account plus a check for discs for the Calapooia Classic. The check’s incoming from Mr. Pittman who’s taking registration for the event. The Wash Report: (Mr. Smith) Wash prizes are a little slower coming in so Event Director Smith is expanding prize collection to include donors from Albany. It’s a labor of love but he’s meeting more people. (More people=more love?) He’s going to ask for discs donation for prizes. People are planning on playing Suzy Sticks so choose a partner. Help with event organizing will be welcome. He’s not getting new tee shirts after last year when shirts were left over and to save overhead. Come out, eat, and drink Calapooia. If you want to bring additional things to eat, that would be welcome. He has a couple hundred bucks contributed toward food. Bring what you want. Mark suggests doubling Mr. Smith’s mom’s potato salad, which was enthusiastically received last year. He’s not really asking for money for the food, but people can write donation checks to Linn-Benton Food Share. Come out July 25th and the next day for Dion’s tournament. Dion will probably support the Wash in his posts. There will be some incentives for good golfing in a random draw doubles format. It’s a fundraiser for golfers of all skill levels. Someone could bring a temporary basket for practice and ring of fire, perhaps. Special Report: (M&M Picket) Dianna works at Old Mill, which serves special needs children and families. They’re running a summer camp program and a place where the children can be successful. They did disc golf two weeks ago and the kids loved it. They have some old discs donated but need more. Old discs in any condition will work so the campers can take them home. They are also looking for 1 or 2 more adults to teach the campers about disc golf—how not hit each other and safety basics. It’s a lot of fun. You only have to work with 2-4 kids at a time. It’s two hours at the Philomath Middle School at 9:30 a.m. The Co-Op may have some discs from their lost and found, which Mr. Sexton then volunteered. They would appreciate 20 or 30 discs players might want to get rid of, especially lighter plastic. Squirrel’s Anniversary Event: (Mr. Powell) Greg Little from Squirrels puts on an annual Labor Day program at Adair. For this event, it would be nice for Mr. Little, who usually absorbs the costs, to consider putting on a more standard disc golf event. Club members agreed its OK to do. They are trying to offer a few more dollars than regular doubles on Sunday. There may be tents on 12, 13 and 14. It will be in the morning. A full third of the course has not been playable in the past but that may be dealt with this time. It’s planned for Sunday, September the 6th. Dion Arlyn may be having a competing event Labor Day as he did last year and may have to use Willamette or another course. Mr. Banner may move Adair Doubles when Dion has tournament fundraiser events on the 26th of July and Sunday the 6th of September. Squirrels may order 1-200 discs with Mr. Little fronting the costs. He wants one of the older logos on the discs. The club may want some of those stamped discs as well to sell as in past years. The artwork should still be on file. The Squirrel and the cigar logo were mentioned. Mr. Powell will get back to the club with further details in a week or two. Turnaround time for custom discs is about a month or two after the artwork approved. Greg can find out what disc models are available in each plastic. Willamette Open Fundraisers Report: (Mr. Pittman) These are going to be used as a chance to reserve a spot for the Willamette Open. Mr. Arlyn will collect entry fees on the spot at the fundraisers. He will be the registration person though Mr. Storrs will run it. Dion will be the official Tournament Director but will only take registration. Mr. Storrs might want to run Timber Linn as a third course if he has the energy. Registration will open the day after the August 2nd sponsoring event. The Calapooia classic is the 8th and 9th. Handicap Report: (Mr. Storrs) The latest round just finished on Sunday. He had 8 guys and none could use the points. A new season starts tomorrow with people being given their old handicaps for an 8-week run. They will continue paying out the top 5 spots $125-130 and collecting money for the Willamette Open. Participation has been best on Tuesdays and Sundays have been hit or miss. He’s averaged about 12 participants per event. The winners are tripling their money on average. Willamette Open: (Mr. Storrs) He’s open to suggestions for players’ packs. The metal water bottles imprinted with a logo are possible. Mr. Johnson suggested considering pottery mugs in pint sizes. He’ll take the lead in lining them up through a potter that belongs to the Hyzer Desert Rebels club. They’re nice trophies. Calapooia Brewing might help out with funding. Mike’s concerned about spending too much money on the 30 trophy winners. We like the idea of something functional. Consider big mugs for first place, maybe and pint glasses for others. They could have a tournament logo with details of the year. A miniature version of disc design is put on plate on one side of the glasses. It’s baked in. Almost looks like a wood burning on ceramic. Other suggestions for players pack included discs, or umbrellas, but maybe a better one than last year. They cost about $11 each and that cuts into players pack funds. Adair Greenskeeper Report: (Mr. Kaser) He sent an e-mail to County Parks about building stairs up middle of 10, especially in the wintertime. They said that sounds good. They wanted us to use the same materials and construction as used for stairs by 10 tee. They’ll let me know if they have some materials. We’ll see what they get for railroad ties. He’s thinking we’ll build a set of stairs on the left, close to 10’s basket. It may happen this summer. Mr. Sexton called attention to the tree protectors, which are taking heavy damage. They get hard hits. Some people are proud of their hits and are signing it, Mr. Skinnell reported. Mr. Ross suggested fashioning protectors out of shipping rope lines. He will research the potential along with Mr. Sexton. They need to blend in, according to Parks. There have been complaints about public urination at Adair. Parks put up some signs. Willamette Greenskeeper Report: (Mr. Sexton) There will be a Work party on Saturday the 11th from 9-12 at Willamette with chips delivered to refresh paths. Bring forks and wheelbarrows or use what City Parks provides. Labor will be our payment to the city to meet the terms of our agreement. Mr. Sexton would like to offer a $7 coupon for club disc discounts as incentive for work party participation. That was approved. We will mulch tree plantings to protect their moisture levels and put guard poles on the Ponderosa pines. Gravel will be refreshed where appropriate. Signs will go up at both courses announcing the work party. Mr. Ross suggested taking a look at pavers used on the scouts’ bridge through from 1 to 2. Mr. Sexton said he would check with Parks on what’s planned and possible to stabilize them. Adair Doubles Report: (Mr. Banner) He’s got money totaling $255 in mulligans to now plus money from previous events. The Adair Ace pot is at $600. Disc Tsar Report: (Mr. Pittman) He said a new order came in just after our last meeting. He sold about $300 this month. Have about 370 discs, worth about $2900 in club inventory. We are going to be handling scrip for the Calapooia Classic and Willamette Open fundraisers. We will choose from discs on hand or order some more stock discs when we order for fundraiser discs for Squirrels or The Open. Mr. Storrs said he was open for someone else to submit a Willamette Open Logo design even as he works on an idea of his own. President’s report: David Phillips the new Operations Director at Corvallis City Parks seems willing to work with us. He suggested he talk to Steve McGettigan about disc golf. He’ll let them know about the Willamette Open and any hoops we need to jump through. County Parks had a meeting with it’s advisory board about the new on leash policy for dogs and park staff and kind of came in sheepish and said they made the decision and asked what does advisory board think. They came around to saying they would look at on and off leash areas and possibly see how that works. Mr. Sexton sent them a map with one possible area off leash area near 2nd parking area and another near the previous island hole. He also suggested an on-leash buffer zone for 1-200 feet out from the playground area. This week the county staff will come back with staff recommendations. Parks didn't respond to Mr. Sexton’s map ideas at that point. For the President’s Cup, he will pick October 24th. It’s not a Beavers home football date. It’s a Saturday. It’s possible at Fort Hoskins or Beazell though not likely based on past Parks Department response. Walnut Park was the site of the first one and might work as well. We did one at North Albany and then at The Marys River park site in Philomath as well. The meeting adjourned at about 8 p.m.
