Willamette Disc Golf Meeting Notes Monday, May 4, 2009 Attendance: Jay Sexton, Dave Pittman, Jim Dubay, Everett Kaser, Kelly Christiansen, Rick Reicherd, John Ross, Greg Johnson. Adair Report: (Mr. Kaser) He went on a walk about recently with Al Kitzman and Ranger Bruce and new Parks Director Jeff Powers. They focused on tree protectors. They liked the work generally and preferred Mr. Kaser’s design for big trees and Mr. Sexton’s on small trees. Mr. Kitzman was concerned about ruggedness and vandalism. He was informed they were replaceable. Most of the planned protectors were for trees on 3, 7, 8, 10, 16 and 17. Some trees were selected by parks. Concrete tees are on hold until Benton County Parks and Natural Areas master plans are completed in a year. No. 18 tee pad was torn by a mower. Bruce may have some tee pad material left in the shop to replace it and will check. We have to replace that tee. Mr. Johnson suggested turning the pads over, cutting one in half, such as 15 to move to 18 or whatever seems appropriate. Year ago, we talked about the path from basket one to tee two from the short position between the trees and up the hill. Steps may be needed to maintained the slope. Mr. Kitzman has backtracked on his support for the “Mt. Everett” pin placement on Hole 3. He cited safety issues from a steep and unstable slope and all the rubble. New director didn't seem all that opposed but deferred to Mr. Kitzman, who’s a safety guy. Some blackberries are dying and more spraying is coming in the fall. There was talk about planting a Ponderosa Pine between holes 3 and 4. The club or parks could pay for this. No parking signs going up along kiosk at parking lot. Dogs on leash was mentioned by Mr. Kitzman who and they said they expect complaints but they’re determined to move ahead countywide on a leash requirement. Not mentioned on county parks. They’re just in the process of implementing this. The Parks Advisory committee talked about it for Crystal Lake Cemetery near CoHo in Corvallis. Then an issue came up at Beazell Park which has an education center where kids come out. Locals bring out dogs and let them run. The advisory board hadn’t come to a decision, but suggested parks administration they could think about how to solve dog issues. They talked about making that an on-leash park. Mr. Sexton said he talked with George McAdams who said they had been getting complaints at Bezel and Fitton Green. No problems at Adair were mentioned. In some other states, such as Boulder, CO, and they are requiring owners demonstrate voice control to get a permit for off leash. Going down Hole 4 and the aerodromer’s area, mowing came up and park's plan is to mow the field every other year, which means it should get mowed this year. There is still some talk about a campground in the aerodrome area, but some resistance as well though it’s still being considered after around six years. Willamette Report: Mr. Sexton worked with Greg Alpert and Steve McGettigan based on interaction and girl scouts who wanted to plant some trees. The scout leader was left with map and dots but lacked a sense of disc golf play. Greg wasn't there when the girls showed up late. They had Douglas firs they put tight along 18 along the swamp and along one and where there weren’t trees. They planted 13 trees total. Next Sunday, they will plant their last 12 trees. Probably they will wind up along edges and won’t affect play. Adair Doubles Report: They’ve had reasonable turnouts except this weekend when it competed against an event after being moved to Willamette. Doubles has contributing $59 to ace pot for events at Mr. Johnson’s house. There is about $270 in ace pot reserve. They still also have money designated for a doubles party. Storrs aced 14 in the middle position on Friday. Didn't see it. Nate in tie for 2need at great NW and there was a woman who got an ace and screwed up his runup and he gridlocked. Willamette Wash Report: It’s still set for July 25. Treasurer’s Report: We have about $2550 in cash, after $1200 was paid to Innova for a disc order. Whistler’s has asked the club to sponsor a doubles hole at that event. It was approved for $25. Handicap Report: (Nothing offered) Disc Tzar: A missing disc was found. Our net inventory was 385 discs and $3,000 in dollar value. We gave away some a prizes. We have new bosses, dyed pro drivers, R-Pro Aviars and Darts. The original Discraft order has been received and sold. We’re probably going to have to order more soon. We’ll get a better price going through Dion Arlyn to order them. He has no minimum quantities required. Mr. Pittman discussed disc prices. We’ve been charging about a dollar less than retail, such as at First Alternative Co-Op. Their Star Innova Plastic retails at $17, and we moved it to $16. All other prices remain the same. When we do the scrip for Calapooia and WO, however, we want to do them at retail prices like other clubs will mark them. Recommended retail prices for Innova discs for 2009 are: $17.99 Star $15.99 Champion & I-Dye Pro $12.99 Pro $8.99 DX WDGC prices for 2009 before club member discount $16 Star (Increase of $1) $14 Champion & I-Dye Pro (no change) $11 Pro (no change) $8 DX (no change) Disc prices increased in 2008 but we held Star plastic at $15 except for first runs and custom stamps. Our pricing is based on the cost we pay for discs, but we do consider other factors when pricing limited editions and custom stamps. The club will continue to have the best disc prices around BEFORE taking your club member discount. April Fools Doubles Report: Title discs has not sent them $150 and Nate’s upset with them. The club is down about $15-20 instead of being ahead about $130, which will happen. Albany monthly is Saturday at Bryant. Presidents report: (Mr. Sexton) A letter was written to the Benton County commissioners with an added sentence. The letter was approved in its final form by a show of hands and club members were asked to sign it with their name and city. There is some possibility parks would be willing to set aside some areas as on-leash and some as voice control. Mr. Sexton will meet with Willamette park officials and look for stuff for the club to do at the park and to move forward on cooperation with parks. His final draft of Bylaws amendments is not finished yet. Sponsorship of Beaver State Fling: A proposal for the club to make a $100 contribution passed in a 4-2 vote. Galvanization is done on basket anchors and collars and we’re set to put in a new course when we can find a location. Costs were up a little bit based on per pound prices, instead of a flat rate. They cost $250. Still a lot cheaper than buying them through the Disc Golf Association. On the Course in Philomath and work parties are planned. It has been played by members and work party will definitely help. On a new course on Oregon State University property, we’re running out of time this year. We can get a deal through Innova with half of the baskets being free. The city is another possibility because they see Willamette is overused. They recognize sustainability issues and driving safety concerns. The meeting Adjourned at 8 p.m.
