WDGC monthly meeting - Tuesday, Oct 7, 2008

A fairly well attended meeting (other than the President, Secretary,
Under-Secretary, past-President, Willamette Greenskeeper, and several
other of the less reputable members...)

Everett Kaser filled in for President Jay Sexton to lead the meeting,
and is also assembling these notes from hastily scribbled jottings
and fading memories.

Treasurer's Report: the club has $6270 in the checking account, and
owes somewhere around $600 to $800 in refunds for the WOX and other
minor bills, leaving the club approximately $5400 in the BLACK.

Adair Greenskeeper's Report: An attempt has been made to contact Ranger
Bruce to get some blackberries sprayed, but so far with no success.
Work will continue on the #3 "tournament position" hill to improve it,
with hopes that it will be someday next year be approved by Parks as
a permanent year-around alternative basket position.  Stairs will need
to be built and some amount of terracing and "landscaping" of the rubble.

Willamette Greenskeeper Report: not much reported, some bees taken care of,
signs picked up from the tournament.

Adair Doubles Report: Some amount of money ($71 ???) contributed to the
club coffers, $200-and-some dollars in the Ace Pot.

Adair Handicap Leauge Report:  Start Sunday, Nov 2 after Sunday Doubles.

Willamette Open Wrap-Up: Money was lost, money was found, Kelly was pissed,
fun all around.

Willamette WASH Wrap-Up: Over $1000 raised for the Food Share, fun all around.

Presidents Cup Report: Mark Martin was not in attendance.  The Cup will be
Saturday Nov 1 at Mary's River Park in Philomath.  Do we need to post signs
at Adair and Willamette to notify non-Yahoo club members?

Disc Tzar Report: LOTS of discs sold in August and September, the new BOSS
discs were a BIG hit at the WOX, the Disc Tzar is King.  Great work!

Adair #4 tree removal: voted on and passed.  The marked trees and shrubs will
be eliminated by the Adair Greenskeeper.

New meeting day: discussion was held, motion was made to move the meetings
hence-forth to MONDAY evenings, starting with the November meeting.  The
vote passed.  ALL future meetings will be held on the first MONDAY of the
month, still at Woodstock's.  No one was certain when the time change is,
but it was decided that the November meeting will be at 6:00 regardless.

Nominations for 2009 WDGC officers: Greg Johnson stepped out of the room
for a beer, Jay Sexton and Bob Burton were absent.  Given those circumstances,
the club had no choice but to nominate and re-elect Greg Johnson as Treasurer,
Bob Burton as Secretary, and Jay Sexton as President for 2009.

President's Report: Liability Insurance and Corvallis Parks Agreement Update.

As one of the requirements for the agreement with the City of Corvallis they 
wanted us to have liability insurance.  Jay found an insurance provider 
Francis L. Dean and Associates from Illinois. They are the same provider 
that does the PDGA insurance for tournaments.  This policy would cover 
liability for all our members or people participating in our sponsored 
activities up to $1,000,000.  Our sponsored activities would include tourneys,
club weeklys, work parties, and any other WDGC event we organize.  Additionally
there is accident coverage that would cover our members up to $10,000 with
$100 deductable for injuries during club sponsored events. Medical and dental.
Jay thought this might be attractive to those of us without health insurance.
The details are in a 56 page document.  The cost to the club would be $510 per
year.  The agreement with Corvallis Parks will allow us to sell discs at
Willamette Park for 6 months (summer) of the year. This could provide us with
adequate funds for this.  Additionally we could raise dues to $15 per year and
use the addditonal money toward this insurance.  It is likely that we would get
more members with greater visability - selling discs at Willamette - and so we
might have more members contributing.  We can discuss this further at the
November meeting.

(Greg Johnson, I believe, suggested that the club could even designate $10 of
the $15 membership fee towards paying for the insurance.)  The idea of getting
the insurance for the club was quite positive, especially if it would allow
us to sell discs at Willamette and if it would allow non-PDGA club members to
play in PDGA tournaments without having to pay the PDGA's $10 insurance fee.

Sustainability Fair:
Jay has been co-facilitating a sub-group at the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition. 
Tonight they are having a "fair" and a town hall sustainability meeting. In the
fair Jay is going to have a table representing the WDGC as a sustainable
alternative to ball golf - highlighting it's environmental advantages:
1) Not dependent on huge petroleum, pesticide, herbicide and irrigation water
   use to maintain the course.
2) Approximately 1/3 the land area needed.
3) Equipment manufacture is much smaller footprint, fewer, simple raw materials.
4) Disc golf courses are typically much more "natural" favoring native vegetation.
5) Low cost, accessible to wide local demographic.
6) Exclusively non-motorized - no carts.

Jay was absent from the WDGC October meeting because he was at the above mentioned
Sustainability Fair.
