Tuesday, April 1, 2008 Attendance: John Ross, Nate Sexton, Jay Sexton, Kelly Christiansen, Everett Kaser, Craig Banner, Dave Pittman, Richard Raymond, Mark Martin, Laura Bryngelson, Greg Johnson, Mike Gibson, Casey Lohrman, Colin Sexton, Eric Smith, Jim Dubay. Brianna Anderson-Gregg, Heather Rickenbach, Lane Tidwell, Karl Pilotte, and Sharon Kaser. Treasurer: (Mr. Johnson) The April Fools Doubles tournament returned $1332 for about a $300 net profit to the club. Total funds were estimated about $2150. Adair Greens keeper: (Mr. Kaser) Ground getting a little torn up and we need to work with Benton County Parks on solutions such as trails from basket 1 to No 2's tee. Some problems in front of tee boxes as well. He dropped some rock in front of some of the worst boxes. We really need a good long term solution, he said. No 16 in front of the tee is just mud. Probably need to put a lot of wood chips down. We need to talk with parks about whether chips or rock are best from their standpoint. This winter it's gotten a lot worse. Mr. Kaser would also like to see some tree protection on trees close to the tee boxes which are getting hit hard and regularly. Some trees two feet in diameter are losing bark. He wants to look for some sort of protective barrier. Mr. Christiansen reported on a dustup between a club member who had it out with Dave Feldberg. It was to the point of them going to fight. Storrs defended the course very well. Mr. Feldberg was complaining about hole No. 4, our favorite hole, he said. They were playing worst shot. Feldberg punched into the gap and threw to the burn pile. Mr. Feldberg got into PDGA rules where there's not supposed to be anything 20 feet around the basket. Trunks are allowed, but branches are not. It escalated into a yelling match and looked like it might get worse. Eventually they worked it out. Dave and Avery were having it handed to them in worst shot. They got to play the whole 2nd round together and both admitted they had taken it a bit to far. Willamette Greenskeeper: President Sexton reported on a letter he sent to Corvallis Parks and Recreation. They didn't really respond he said. He copied Steve Deghetto, Acting Director Emery, Forester Becky Merja and one other park official. Nobody really replied. After two weeks, Deghetto, said he was still working on his draft and proposed a walk around the course. President Sexton asked to meet with Emery on things not in the draft agreement, such as recreational activities in the park and the vendor concept and fees as well as other courses in the park's domain. One day we will get to meet with parks and work everything out, he said. He reported he had no news on the Oregon State University disc golf club. He'll try for a connection. Adairs doubles: Mr. Banner gave Treasurer Johnson $162 for doubles since December. The ace pot stands at $357, he said. Handicap: Mike Storrs was reportedly thinking about moving the event starting on Monday of next week. There's a chance for doubles twice a week on Monday and Thursday. The Sunday handicap will end but it's still in the thinking stage. Willamette Open X: Mr. Johnson said he's in favor of changing the date so it's not on an OSU football weekend. Apparently, it was reported, setting the date was not among the tournament director's options in the Oregon Series. It's a bad decision for both the football fans and the traffic between Willamette and Adair, Mr. Martin said. Members could support Mr. Storrs trying to make the change, it was suggested. Mr. Johnson said he will talk to Mr. Storrs to see if a change is possible. He's also heard there's a qualifying criteria for players who have played four or five tournaments last year. No one knows whether Mike will apply that rule. Players would need to have played four events last year and could register and the event would close out four days after that. High Desert Rebels may have an event on Memorial Day weekend in Sisters Oregon with no camping available, Mr. Christiansen reported. Mr. Gibson suggested that the event give some consideration to our club members. Greg said a PDGA rule is involved and Mr. Storrs will have to take reservations on a first come, first serve rather than open registration 3-4 months in advance. PDGA will be charging $10 for non members in sanctioned events this year. It's being advertised as a discount for members rather than a surcharge, as in past years. People who go to four or five events don't want to complete for spots with people who don't play regularly, Mr. Christiansen explained. Mr. Storrs may use three courses again for the Willamette Open and it won't be a problem. He heard there was 131 or 124 qualifiers from last year. It was also reported that the Oregon Series volunteers are trying to get out of the last event before 9-10 at night. They will have two separate award ceremonies at the Sisters event: One to pass out stuff while the afternoon round is going on. Mr. N. Sexton reported he paid $31 in extra fees for the Masters series. Albany club may tack on extra $2 for basket fees, says Dave and recommends an extra fee to pay for tee pads. April Fools Report: (Mr. N. Sexton) Went well for everyone there. Raised money for the club. Some people who helped out with the tournament will get a free disc from club stocks. People can get a disc of their choice. It was fun and well done by all accounts, save maybe a dustup with a World Class Ego. Disc Tsar: (Mr. Pittman) He started with an inventory of 113, bought 244, sold 38, an additional 77 went into doubles players packs, 61 went through scrip redemption, and 39 for Festivus and the Willamette work party. The inventory was down to 143 before the meeting. Some scrip was cashed in tonight. He talked about ordering 25 Excaliburs, which are made of recycled plastic in green. Dave will order more DX Destroyers, some XD putters, Pro Destroyers and some fly dye, which flew out of here in destroyer models. He forgot KC rocs last order but will bring in some along with some in 150 weights. He may get some Super Rocs and 20 more Star Destroyers. More Firebirds in Star plastic will be coming along with More Roadrunners which went. He will get some Skeeters since we need some mid ranges. He talked about also adding a couple 150 Valkyries. The order will get here in less than a week, he said. He said he was also thinking about getting some Champion Eagles. President's Report: (President Sexton) He reported on at Adair plantings. Most doing well. Grasses are starting to take. Adopt a park status has been applied for with Benton County Parks. The program is apparently not quite in place at this time Dana offered $100 to club for Scorecard holders. Other members of the club pitched in and brought the cost down to about $40. Sara Johnson and Toni Hoyman will being offering a women's clinic they've called Chic Flick, probably May 3rd at Philomath Middle School. That is the World's Biggest Event Day as well. Mr. Johnson reported that a woman at HP had a few friends interested in developing their game from the novice level and in instruction. They are willing to pay, he said, for training oriented towards women. Greg will get the "Chick Flick" date back to his friend, Suzy. She may start coming to club meetings. May do a follow-up event if necessary. Action Items: Proposed for a vote. Purchase tournament display card holders. They cost $109 plus $5 in shipping. Dana Lawton has offered $100. Do we really need them if the Oregon Series has them? Mr. Martin said that the event this weekend illustrated it would have been nice to have them so you could walk to your starting hole. He thinks there's enough of our tournaments with Greg's Presidents Cup and April Fools and other events and that Albany could use them as well. He thinks we should have at least one. Mr. Johnson says we should have two. It definitely helps the event run smoother. You can see cards, positions and starting holes. It has become more state of the art. Greg will kick in $50 and Casey has promised $40. We might rent them out to neighboring clubs. Why not talk to the Albany club about getting one, suggested Mr. Gibson. Mr. Johnson replied Albany is still trying to fund baskets and we shouldn't be looking to extract money from them or from the new Salem club. President Sexton suggested going ahead and getting both and possibly renting them out to make up the difference. They would only cost $30 at this point. He moves the club fund the other $30. The discussion was closed and voice vote taken. None were opposed and the expense was approved. Next was a recommendation by President Sexton that the club move no. 4 long anchor. He briefly told the history of the long position and conflict with the Aeroplaner Club which ended with an agreement for a two months notice and limit to once a year. The Airplane club has been looking for a place for a long, long time and hasn't been successful. The land is federal government land leased to Benton County for public park with several provisos that the Feds could take it back if it gets used for a profit. We haven't used it, he said, and we can always put a temp basket there. He proposed moving it to the middle position on 13 so we will be able to play that. That position is near the tennis courts and between trees under their canopy. After a voice vote, the proposal passed without opposition. President Sexton reported he had interviewed with Benton County parks along with eight other candidates. Jay said 47 people applied and he expects to hear soon. The date of Saturday, May 17 was set for the WDGC Invitational. It conflicts with Mr. Martin's beer festival that weekend at Rogue Brewing, but he decided he can make it on the way back. The Oregon Homebrew Festival will be at Calapooia on the 17th as well. Mr. Johnson said he would be planning a work party on the weekend before on May 3rd and on the 10th. Those will be tentative dates until after he settles his childcare duties. The course does not look good for Starker Land play, he said. Firs are a foot taller than last year. You can't see some trees and where the baskets would be from the tee boxes. He may shorten the course and play three rounds or think about some tree trimming. He doesn't see being able to get the course ready before May, which figured into the chosen date. N. Sexton reported that playing the April Fools Doubles layout made him want to expand Adair to 21 or 27 holes, include some bricks around the circle or island hole. President Sexton suspected Parks wouldn't go for it but promised to propose it. Meeting adjourned after which members introduced themselves. Respectfully submitted, John W. Ross Undersecretary
