Way back when...in January 1988, I was on vacation from HP for a couple of weeks, and spent much of it writing an action/arcade game called Snarf. It was inspired by a video arcade game called Tutankham. I got it fairly functional, very close to done, but didn't feel like finishing it, so I released it as "freeware". I retained the copyright, but it was freely distributable. Then, after releasing the original Solitile in mid-1989 as my first shareware product, I was casting about for another product and decided to re-write Snarf, finish it, and release it as shareware. I thus proceeded to do so, releasing it in November 1990 (if memory serves...) It was a complete re-write (very little of the original code was retained), and the game did ok in sales even thought that was at the very end of such "primitive graphics" for arcade games. A number of people created new levels for it and sent them in to me, and I added the levels to the game, which now contains 52 I think (although I could well be off by a bunch...it's been a LONG time since I've looked at it. :-)
So...if you click on the above link (if you haven't already), you'll be able to download the FULL, LICENSED version of Snarf. Play around with it. Have fun.
BEWARE: this is an action-arcade game. It requires quick reflexes. It's a shoot-em-up. You run around shooting Snarfs. Your character looks remarkably similar to the Hero character. The Snarfs looked vaguely similar to the Creepers in Hero. It requires that you be ambidextrous, using one hand to control movement in four directions, while using the other hand to shoot in four directions. This is a DOS game, it does NOT use the mouse.
NOTE: The above Snarf is COPYRIGHTED software. I am hereby giving members of the kasergames mailing list permission to download a copy for their own personal use. Under NO conditions may it be further distributed to anyone else, uploaded to any other machines, ftp sites, web sites, etc.
Way back when...in November 1986, I started to write an arcade game inspired by the video arcade game Qix. This ZIP file contains the program as it was when I dropped the project, along with a README.TXT file that explains everything in detail.
BEWARE: this is an action-arcade game. It requires quick reflexes. This is a DOS game, it does NOT use the mouse. You move your character about using the four cursor keys.
NOTE: The above Q is COPYRIGHTED software. I am hereby giving members of the kasergames mailing list permission to download a copy for their own personal use. Under NO conditions may it be further distributed to anyone else, uploaded to any other machines, ftp sites, web sites, etc.
Way back when...in the summer of 1984, HP was developing their first notebook MS-DOS computer, The Portable (the HP 110). I wrote this arcade game on that computer, later ported it to the HP 95LX and later yet to the HP 100LX & HP 200LX. This ZIP-file includes a copy that runs in MS-DOS mode (it uses the ancient CGA screen mode), and will run on most Windows computers (except 2000, NT, XP maybe). Included in the ZIP file is TIGERFOX.EXE (the game) and TIGERFOX.TXT (an ASCII text file that explains the game and how to play it). You may want a VERY high-speed internet connection to download this file, though: it's a WHOPPING 16 Kbytes!!! :-) Here's a sample screen capture:
BEWARE: this is an action-arcade game. It requires quick reflexes. This is a DOS game, it does NOT use the mouse. You move your character around using TWO cursor keys (turn-left, turn-right).
NOTE: The above TigerFox is COPYRIGHTED software. I am hereby giving members of the kasergames mailing list permission to download a copy for their own personal use. Under NO conditions may it be further distributed to anyone else, uploaded to any other machines, ftp sites, web sites, etc.
